Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov (1810-1881), an eminent Russian scientist, surgeon, educator and public figure spent the last years of his life in a magical spot in Vishnia (the cherry tree) near Vinnytsia (now an urban area of the city). In 1866 he built a house, a pharmacy, and a small hospital where he provided medical assistance to the residents. In 1947 (9.09) the Pirogov's Estate Museum opened there. The museum consists of a house, a pharmacy, and the family cellar where Pirogov's mummified body lies. Wonderful park covering 16 hectares of the estate. There are many trees that Pirogov planted himself. The museum exhibition occupies 10 halls of the main building and exhibition and six rooms in a private pharmacy. There are around 16,500 exhibits in the museum. More than 1500 of them are on display including manuscripts, photographs, private property, surgical instruments, paintings, sculptures, printed works, etc. The library has 7,000 books and magazines, including a large number of Pirogov's works, most of which are anecdotes about his scholarly life and activity. The literature relates to the history of medicine. The museum is very popular not only in our country but also abroad. The number of visitors, including foreign visitors, has already exceeded six million. On one of the walls is a marble plaque that reads: “NI Pirogov lived here from 1866 to 1881”. A bust of a surgeon was erected by the sculptor Krestovsky in one of the park's allies. The museum exhibits display the life and activity of the scientist in chronological order.
