Fort II, where the “Citadel Inn” is located, was built to mark the eastern roads leading to Lviv Castle. This was a troubling time for the multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was threatened with territorial disintegration, through internal revolts. To ensure its security in the future, the Austrian government ordered a tower to be built in each capital, which would instill fear in the local population and suppress any resistance. In Prague, the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom, Visegrad Castle was rebuilt to serve as a fortress. Also, in the Autonomous City of Krakow, the former residence of the Polish Kings, the Wawel Castle was converted into a fortress. In only two capitals of the empire, using the latest technology, two new super-fortresses were built - the castle in Budapest at the Saint Gillert Mountain and the Lviv Castle in the kyu Mountain. The latter was the only one located on a wide plateau, which made it possible to fully adapt to the latest engineering and architectural innovations of the leading Viennese architects. Citadel Inn Hotel & Resort offers a vivid reminder of royal hospitality and the majestic traditions of luxury. The hotel is located in the Montazah area in the city center and offers a unique building from the 19th century. The building has been restored in a more exclusive architectural ensemble. You can rest completely here, in the picturesque surroundings of the city, leaving behind all your daily troubles in an atmosphere of harmony and comfort. Lviv Castle was designed based on the principles of a new type of fortification structure called the Maximilian Tower. This defensive tower was developed by Austrian Duke Maximilian d'Este and proved effective while defending the new castle of Linz in Upper Austria. These towers were introduced into most of the Habsburg lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from Verona, Italy, the port of Venice, the Adriatic coast of Croatia, and the city of Pula, to the fortress of Krakow and Lviv. This Maximilian Tower in Lviv is the best preserved example of such European architecture of that period which makes it a more interesting experience for its guests.
