The Main Astronomical Observatory (MAO) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded on July 17, 1944 on the initiative of the well-known astronomer and geophysicist O.Ya. Orlov (1880-1954), member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The observatory is located 12 km from the center of Kiev, in the Golosev Forest (hence its unofficial name - Gulusev Observatory). The geographical coordinates of the observatory are 2h02m E and 50o21′.9 N, 186 meters above sea level.

The main areas of research at the National Astronomical Observatory (NAS) of Ukraine are:
- basic astronomical measurements, pictorial, astral, solar system astronomy, histogram, and lunar dynamics;
- Earth rotation theory, creation of Earth and space coordinate systems;
- Study the physical and evolutionary properties of blue dwarf galaxies using the best astronomical equipment: 6-meter telescope from SAO RAS (Russian Federation), Hubble telescope, MMT, etc.;
Modeling the chemical evolution of irregular and late disc galaxies; Modeling the formation and evolution of HI superparticles in galaxies of different types; Stellar spectra modeling with NLTE effects taken into account and studying evolutionary changes in the chemical composition of late stars; Numerical simulation of galaxy formation and evolution;
- spectroscopy and investigations of the evolutionary and physical properties of stars and stellar bodies with R CrB phenomena;
- Study of rapid contrast on a small star scale from single-instrument observations and simultaneous observations using a system of divergent instruments;
- Building new models for the release of impulsive energy and the conversion of solar flares; Development of the theory of generating electromagnetic radiation in the solar atmosphere and Earth's magnetosphere; Study of plasma instability on the sun, solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere;
Studies in cosmic ray physics and in the field of interactions of cosmic rays with an interplanetary medium;
- investigations of energetic solar formations (bursts, prominences, flares, etc.) and the quiescent photosphere;
The study of the physics of planetary atmospheres, as well as the optical, dynamic and kinetic properties of the atmosphere, planetary surfaces and their moons; Radiation Transport Theory, Astronomical Instruments Industry
Comet physics and infrared astronomy;
- Dedicated to unique equipment and technologies for remote monitoring of the planets and the Earth's atmosphere.

Starting from 1991, the observatory coordinates the activities of Ukrainian enterprises in providing coordination and time facilities, participates in the implementation of the State Space Program of Ukraine and the State Program for Ecology.
