The Institute of Surgery and Organ Transplantation of the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) of Ukraine is a multidisciplinary research entity. It occupies a leading position in Ukraine with regard to the working problems of new technologies in the field of surgery and transplantation and the application of these technologies in practice. It is a well-functioning, systematic center on the most important problems of surgery and transplantation. The institute is the main organization of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine on problems of surgery and organ transplantation.

The main directions of the scientific and clinical activity of the institute are:
To develop and improve new methods in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases
- Digestive;
The bile duct and pancreas.
Liver, portal hypertension and its complications.
Hearts, aorta, and major vessels;
Diseases and defects that can be treated with microvascular surgery, plastic surgery and organ transplantation (heart, liver and kidneys);
Introduction of methods of prevention and treatment of severe postoperative complications (pulmonary embolism, peritonitis, sepsis);
Hospital infection problems.
Developing new implants, suturing materials and alternative methods of connecting tissues and surgical instruments;
Development of minimally invasive methods (endovascular, endoscopy), lumen puncture methods under control by means of ultrasound and x-ray

Much attention is given to preparing a scientific staff of the highest level for public health services in Ukraine. The professional skill of the surgeons from the Public Health Services, and their familiarity with new techniques of diagnostic and surgical treatment are improved in the courses at the Institute, as well as by conferences, conferences and symposia organized and carried by surgeons. Outside. While conducting scientific research, the institute cooperates with the leading institutes of NAS and AMS, the surgical chairs of the Kiev Medical Academy for postgraduate training, the scientific centers of Germany, Japan, the Czech Republic and France. Multilevel integration allowed for a deep and comprehensive solution to the delivered problems, in this way to increase the theoretical and practical level of scientific research. In addition to significant research work, the institute provides highly qualified assistance to patients in leading clinics, and early in the time of the foundation stage, it is generally recognized in the country and abroad.
