Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine is the largest library in the country, established in 1918 as an information, research, culture and publishing center. The collection contains more than 15 million items. This unique collection includes books, magazines, series, maps, paper music, fine art materials, manuscripts, rare and non-abstract printed books, newspapers and documents of non-traditional materials. The library contains a complete collection of Slavic writings, and archives of notable world scholars and Ukrainian cultural people. The holdings include the Collection of Presidents of Ukraine, archival copies of Ukrainian printed documents from 1917, and the Archives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Annually the library receives 160,000-180,000 documents (books, magazines, newspapers, etc.). The holdings include all Ukrainian publications and copies of all doctoral theses and Ukrainian candidates. The library shares materials with more than 1,500 research and academic institutions and libraries from 80 countries. As depositary of the United Nations since 1964, the Library receives all publications in English and Russian from the United Nations and its own institutions. Material may be searched through printed and online library catalogs, card indexes, and reference databases. Material from 1994 to the present is included in the electronic cards catalog. There are over 30 printed card catalogs divided by topic and rating. Every year, about 500,000 readers use library resources and receive 5 million documents. Every day, about 1,800-2,000 scholars, specialists, graduate students and students visit the library. Readers are presented in 16 specialized reading rooms in the main library complex, and 6 reading rooms at the branch site that houses collections of manuscripts, rare books, prints, copies, musical editions, Jewish manuscripts and printed editions, the largest collection newspaper in Ukraine, and the archives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The library serves government bodies such as the Verkhovna Rada, the President, and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
